Ice Dams
Ice Dams Explained
Ice dams can be like bullies on your roof during winter, wreaking havoc and creating headaches for homeowners. Here’s how they form, what problems they cause and how to keep them away:
What Are Ice Dams?
An ice dam occurs when an accumulation of frozen precipitation forms along the edge of your roof near its gutters, creating an unsightly wall of ice that blocks off water drainage channels – this is known as an ice dam.
How are dams formed?
Warm air from your attic escapes, warming the roof surface and melting snow on it. When this water reaches colder eaves (edges that hang over walls) where temperatures drop lower, it refreezes forming a dam.
Why Are Ice Dams Dangerous?
Ice dams can become problematic because more melted water becomes trapped behind their walls and increases flooding problems. They should also be seen as bad news because:
Trapped water can leak under your shingles and into your attic or home, causing serious water damage. Heavy ice dams may even destroy your roof itself! But these threats don’t need to come at you from every direction – there are ways to fight back! For starters:
Proper attic ventilation helps ensure warm air does not escape and melt the snow on the roof, while good roof insulation slows heat loss from your attic, thus reducing snowmelt.
Snow Removal: Removing snow regularly from your roof can help avoid ice dam formation. (Be cautious when working on it during winter weather; consider hiring professional services if necessary.)
Take these steps to keep your roof clear of ice dams, which could potentially save time and hassle in the form of repairs and maintenance costs.
