What’s the difference?
Rubber – or EPDM roofing is similar to the rubber of your car tires and is typically a black membrane. The membrane is glued down to roof insulation or a hard board substrate. All seams and flashings are installed using seam tapes, adhesives, and flashing materials. Manufacturer warranties of rubber roofing range from 15-30 years depending on membrane thickness and other factors.
TPO and PVC are both types of plastic which is reinforced with a fibered backing or scrim. This product can be glued down or it may be mechanically fastened. (Screws and metal plates hold the perimeter in place). The biggest difference in the appplication is that all seams and flashings are heat welded in lieu of the glue system. Heat welders are used to warm the membrane to 1,000 – 1,200 degrees F. This melts or welds the mebrane together providing a water-tight seal.
